How do you make money with your forum?

Hi. Forgive my ignorance and bluntness at the same time. I'm starting a forum to make and generate income. The idea I have will bring a lot of vistors. But I'm unsure what to do with all the traffic. Is it worth starting a forum to make a profit or do most people do it for the love of connecting with different people?

Thank you. I don't mean to sound like a capitalist pig, but I've spent so much money on business ventures it's actually affecting my marriage. Thing is, I believe in the forum I'm going to start and I know it will help people, I just need to turn some sort of a profit eventually. Let alone the cost of maintaining the site.
