Where's the login page?

I am making this inquiry for a friend who is asking my advice on which bulletin board to get (IPB or VB).

His only concern is that there's no seperate login page other than the quick login form. At least none we can find on this site. The problem is that the way he must skin the board (according to his site) the quick login form wont fit in the skin. So a user wont have anyway to login. Yes we know it shows the login whenever you do an action that requires login, but the user won't know this and would be very confusing and frustrating for new users who go to login and cant find how

So is there a setting in the ACP or some solution for this?

Not for me...

When I open login.php in my browser it redirects me to the forum index page.

I read the code and it's set to redirect if the action is not 'do=SOMETHING'...I think, it was awhile ago since I read it.

When logged out I just get ridirected to the homepage if i visit login.php

because that is a failsafe so people dont try to bypass it however you can modify that to run the login query instead of kicking you back to the main page. .org for more help on that would be my guess

Actually a standard login is built into the error page called "No Permission". It will be shown if and only if a user needs to login. You can create your own by copying the login form code to any HTML page on your domain.

This seems a very round-aboutish type of way to get a simple login page form for those who dont want the quick login form to clutter their design (or wont work with it). Is there any reason the Vbulletin system was designed like this so illogical? In all other forum systems the quick login is discretionary, not the other way around how it is in Vublletin.

You know you can get rid of the quick login at the top? it's just html in the templates.

I agree, If one needs a login page and has zero programming knowledge, how do you expect them to be able to do this.

Assuming they have no knowledge of programming, they can not modify anything due to a fear that is most likely a fear of ruining their board.

HTML knowledge is required to modify the styles. Removing a standard feature and moving it to your own page requires nothing more. You do not need to change any PHP code or MySQL code to create a standalone login page, just copy the form out of the template and into your own HTML page. Don't even have to change the action or anything else.

If the end-user does not know HTML, then the chances are they are not going to be modifying the style extensively or they will hire someone with the knowledge to do so.

In the default style, a standalone login page is not needed because the login form appears on every page it is needed on.

It may be easy but still, that doesn't answer why the system was designed this way. IPB has the quick login form AND a regular login link to a regular login page which requires nothing more than removing the quick login form if the admin doesn't want it. With Vbulletin you need to...log out, go to a page that requires login, vew the source, copy and paste, save as a file, upload via FTP, and manually enter that file's link via ACP. I hate to say it, but that's just a very...amatuerish way of doing something so basic as removing what some people consider clutter, especially for a paid bulletin board.

Again, I'm not saying it's VERY difficult to add a standard login page, but when something so simple is so hard in Vbulletin, it creates some serious doubts about the reliability of the software. It sort of unhinged reality for me. No standard login page? The thought was absurd to me, especially since showing the login form by default when viewing login.php would have been ridiculously easy. It's almost as if it was made to intentionally cause frustration. Yes I know that's not true, but if a potential customer feels that way, you know something is wrong here.

So this may no longer be a pre-sale question, but I seriously consider taking this very minor suggestion to heart.

You do not need to log out... The Quick Login code is in the Navbar template and it is all you need. You do not need to find a page that requires login. It was designed this way because this is what the customers asked for during the development of vBulletin 3.0 and being able to integrate the login into multiple systems how they wanted.
