  • A couple of questions....

    Hi.
In view of the current problem with older phpbb boards I am thinking of updating to Vb ( arnt we all ! ) and putting it into its own domain.

A couple of questions first though please.
1... I see that I can import my membership and posts from some versions of phpbb, does this go back as far as version 2.0.1 ? .... and if so, will it make any difference that this new board will be on a different site to the old phpbb one ?

2... this one gets a little complicated and this is my 4th ( edited ) attempt at explaining it

My main site has a membership section run by a programe called 'Amember pro'. Most of the phpbb forum on that site can be used by anyone without the need to register ( and I have actually removed the ability for anyone to register ) but one section is kept for site members and the membership programe has a plugin that automatically makes anyone joining the site a member of the members section of the forum as well.

I guess I am not going to be able to use that feature if I move the forum to its own site/domain but I would still want the ability to remove the non members ability to register and then creat members myself through the admin area so that I can keep part of the forums for members without them having to jump through hoops....... Does that make any sence ???? if so, can I do that ?

    Many thenks.
    Graham

    Hello Graham,

Thank you for your interest in the vBulletin forum software and for contacting vBulletin sales.

Converting from a third party bulletin board system like phpBB to vBulletin is possible by using the vBulletin ImpEx software which licensed vBulletin members can download for free from the members area (and also, just like with vBulletin forum software, comes with free support, installation and usage manual).

Q: I see that I can import my membership and posts from some versions of phpbb, does this go back as far as version 2.0.1 ? .... and if so, will it make any difference that this new board will be on a different site to the old phpbb one ?

A: No, the ImpEx forum software is from version 2.0.8 to the latest. For version 2.0.1 we suggest to use the import script that comes with version 2.3.5 of vBulletin (and then you can upgrade 2.3.5 of vBulletin to 3.0.3 of vBulletin). Or .. upgrade your phpBB 2.0.1 to 2.0.11 first.

And as for your second question: We do not provide support or an API for integration with third party software like aMember Pro. Sorry. What you could do is request support for integration into vBulletin from their sales/support.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

We're looking forward to your purchase.

      Hi
Thanks for the answer to question 1. that is what I thought I might have to do

Q2 was not so much about an API to Amember..... but can I disable the registration ( maybe just comment out the registration button ) and then add members myself through the control panel ( sounds ham fisted I know but it is a niche area and they wont be joining at anything like the rate that yours seem to

Sorry, I understand what you mean now

Yes, vBulletin has an enhanced registration system.

You can turn on and off the registration system.
You can turn on and off image verification. (so no spam bots can register)
You can turn on and off email validation. (users are required to enter valid email and validate account)
You can turn on and off new user moderation. (admin has to accept/decline new registrations)

You could request a 24 hours lasting admin demo to try out the admin control panel of vBulletin and the features here: http://www.vBulletin.com/admindemo/

Ok, I am in the live demo now, thats mind boggling !!

I am sure that I am just being thick but where do I find the ability to list new members myself through the cp ?
