  • How long is a piece of string?

The title says it all, but.

How much bandwidth and how much server space do you require to run a forum?

    Assume 250 users (Specialist subject)

Assume a few posts each per week.

Assume I control uploads of attachments.

this obviously impacts the running cost of the board.

Anyone got any rules of thumb I can use?

    250 users online? or total?

I would guess for a starter 10gb of bandwith and about 100~ megs of storage would probaly suit you at least for 3-6 months. depending on growth at least.

I would think for the first 6 months 250 users total.

would be nice to have more, but realistically, that'll be it.

250 registered users with 10-20 online peak im going to guess, my post above would be correct

I have a forum with about 40 members who post daily (there are more members but there are about 40 regular posters), there are usually about 200+ posts per day plus private messaging and about 100+ page hits every 5 minutes. There is a high res photo album and avatars can be as big as 20k ... In a year I have only exceeded the 15 gig bandwidth allowance once. Admittedly this is phpbb but it is seriously hacked and has up to 70 db queries per page load ... far more than vbulletin I do believe.
