How do you make it so that your users don't need to get a email with a password and so that they can just pick it when you register.

Just overwrite the image.
You can turn off ratings in each forum's options.Comment

Edit the body tag and change the background color to something besides purple and remove
background="menu_background.gif"
from the header template (it appears twice).Comment
