    Reverting custom templates in v 3.7.2 PL1

    Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting here, so please be gentle.

I purchased a vBulletin powered (v3.7.2 PL1) forum a little while ago, and I'd like to upgrade the software to v3.8.6 PL1. However, since purchasing the site I've found according to the site's Admin Control Panel there are 11 out-of-date customized templates. From what I can see, these templates are from v3.5.3 (one is from v3.5.4). And while I've figured out how to compare the customized templates to their 'standard' counterparts, I have no idea what the template changes/customizations actually do since they were all made way before I took over the site by people I don't know.

So my question is: Is there a way to temporarily revert these custom templates (maybe one at a time...?) so that I can check to see what the effects of permanently reverting them would be?

Also, in order to update to 3.8.6PL1, do I need to revert these custom templates prior to updating anyway?

I should mention, my experiences/knowledge of vBulletin is a bit limited so please bare with me if I've asked stupid questions.

    Thanks very much in advance.

There is no temporary revert option. What I suggest you do is copy-n-paste the contents of those templates into a text file, then revert them for testing. That way you can always refer to or restore the original custom code if you need to.

Hi Steve, thanks for the response.

I was going to do exactly as you've suggested - just copy and paste the current template code into a simple text file, revert and see what happened, I was just hoping there was an easier way to do it through the vBulletin Admin CP. Unless something adverse or weird happens, I'd be happy just reverting to the default templates and making them active. Like I said in my original post, there's only 11 custom templates, so it shouldn't take TOO long to try your suggestion.

However, that raises another question: If I find the custom templates are indeed needed, how would I go about updating to 3.8.6 PL1? Would I revert all the custom templates in 3.7.2 first, perform the update, then replace the new templates with the custom code of the old templates, or can I just go ahead and update hoping the installer script(s) will leave the custom templates in place?

Sorry for all the questions. Again, my experience and knowledge of vBulletin is at the novice level at best.

You can revert the templates after upgrading or before. It really makes no difference.

So does that mean the installer scripts won't replace the custom templates when running the update to 3.8.6 PL1?

If that's the case, then this may simply be a situation where the previous owner/admin of the site modified the templates in question when the site was running v3.5.x, but never bothered to update/revert the templates after updating.

No. Custom templates are not replaced.

So that may very well explain why the custom templates exist on my site in the first place - because they were never replaced during updates since the installer scripts don't replace them with the default templates.

I'll try your suggestion to investigate the effect of reverting the templates (one by one), and if there's no adverse changes to the site I'll perform the update with the default templates in place. Otherwise, I'll leave the customized templates and perform the update as normal.

Thanks again for the help Steve.

Alright, I've been doing a little more digging into these custom templates and I have a couple more questions.

                1. All of the custom templates look to be part of something called a "Kirsch - Fixed" style. What is this? Does this Kirsch - Fixed style come bundled with vBulletin (I'm trying to determine if this style was added after the vBulletin install)?

                2. According to the Style Manager, Vb Default style is the active style on my site. Does this mean that I can safely delete the other styles (there's a total of 3 styles: Kirsch - Fixed, Vb Default, and vBulletin 3) without adversely affecting my forum?

                  1. No. That is a third-party style.

                  2. Probably. But I would just turn those off for now. You may need those for reference later.
