  • header - banner - how to remove border

I've given up after many trials on playing my swf banner in the header. After 30-45 minutes it causes computers to hang up.

So, I'm having half a dozen images (gifs) built into an animated gif. My banner is irregular with some transparent areas in the upper margin. Right now my temporary static banner has a thin-line border around it. I assume that the same line will appear around my animated gif.

How can I remove that "border" if that's what it is called.

you can see what I'm talking about at www.1anglico.org/forums

    Thanks,

Who coded that header? When viewing the source code, it looks like this:
    HTML Code:
    <a href="http://www.1anglico.org/forums/index.php"><center><img src="http://www.1anglico.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=40&pictureid=685"></a></center>
    That's terrible coding. Try this:
    HTML Code:
    <div style="text-align:center;margin:0 auto;"><a href="http://www.1anglico.org/forums/index.php"><img src="http://www.1anglico.org/forums/picture.php?albumid=40&pictureid=685" border="none" /></a></div>
Even that isn't the way I would do it, but I don't have access to your styling area, so it will have to do. You have commented out most of the actual header template when all you had to do was get rid of the flash banner part and put your new logo in. Whoever coded the flash banner doesn't have good code either.

      Thanks, Jim

A friend coded it initially, and I've commented out a lot.

the flash coding came from over on .org

I'm just beginning to try to learn a little html, haven't programmed anything since about 1980, dating back to FORTRAN IV.

Your suggestions are most welcome. I'd love to have that flash banner running again, it looked great, but something (maybe the code that ran it) caused the website to freeze up after it ran for 30+ minutes. So I've begun working on an animated gif that doesn't require a program over in cPanel.

Again, thank you very much, I need all the help I can get.

      Vance

PS - and YES, that DID get rid of the border! So guess I'm going to have to learn html, despite the fact this old fart has CRS disease!

I was happy to help, Vance. I noticed you removed the commented out header code all together. You shouldn't have done that. You should also get in the habit of checking your work in the W3.org validator, as well as checking what you see as a guest, not an administrator. The attachment below shows what I see as a guest - notice that no image is present and causes a in IE browsers. Yesterday, that red X had a border around it and I'm glad my code fixed that problem for you, but my code also introduced another problem - no alt= attribute. I forgot it. Now you need to add it (alt="Welcome to Lightening from the Sky") one space before the />. The page I saw also contains 12 other errors, some attributed to the code you deleted.

If I were you, I would add that header code back and make your new logo/header image work within it. You will be struggling with that template every time there's an update as it is.

        R'gards,

          Thanks, Jim

progress on my part is very slow, due to a very full time job. But your assistance is extremely beneficial and will undoubtedly move me up the learning curve much more quickly. I've copied your W3C analysis and will begin working on finding those errors.

Found a well-organized introductory book by Rob Huddleston on HTML, XHTML, and CSS that is giving me some good insight and examples.

Believe me, I'm not upgrading to another vB version until I have this down, maybe not till 4.0 is finalized. Just don't have the time to rebuild what's taken so long to create.

Thank you very much! You've helped out a lot of old farts who enjoy shooting the bull about 40 years ago, when we were young and thought we were invincible.

It makes me feel good to know that, Vance. If I can help any more, just let me know. Drop by my forum some day and I'll introduce you to one of your neighbors - who's older than both of us.
