  • Remove vB Version From Showing in HTML Source?

    It appears that with recent versions the vB version, style name, and style ID are being included as comments in the HTML source when the CSS definitions are saved as a file instead of being inline.

    How can I turn off those comments?

    Thanks

    There is not setting to do that. You'd have to do this manually.

      Where would that be done?

      It is a big step backwards having those comments in there considering that many sites purposely remove the version number from appearing in the footer phrase & other places to prevent people from looking for explicit vBulletin versions after an exploit has been announced.

        There are no specific instructions. You would have to locate the appropriate templates, phrases and files where this info occurs and manually change it. We do not provide support for this level of modification, You can try www.vbulletin.org.

          Steve, since this is a basic security related issue a customer should not have to seek out this information on their own nor go to a third-party site.

          There is no reason for that information to be hard-coded into the app to begin with. It did not appear in older versions and it makes no sense to now include it.

          I request that this thread by forwarded to the devs' so that an official supported answer can be provided on how customers can remove this information from appearing.

              Removing the visible branding requires a branding free license. Removing non-visible branding is not permitted.

                This is done for caching purposes. If not done then in some circumstances the browser will not recache these files after you change versions. This causes errors and bugs to appear due to outdated files. Removing this string can cause issues on your boards where you will have to explain to users about deleting their temporary internet caches and relogging to correct issues.

                  Kerry-Anne would version numbers in CSS and Java files count as non-visible? Note that using simple plugins in FireFox this information can easily be seen

                    Yes. The only visible branding is that in the footer. All other branding is non-visible and is not permitted to be removed.

                      Anything in the code (regardless of whether or not the code is "visible") should be retained. Branding free only allows removal of the footer branding. Note that this is explicitly stated at the ordering process of the branding free item:
                      This allows you to remove all vBulletin/Jelsoft branding from this vBulletin Forum installation. This refers to the copyright information in the footer only. The logo may be changed without purchasing the Branding Free license.
                      Best Regards,
                      Andy Huang

                        But version number eg 3.7.4 in it self is not part of the copyright is it? I though that number could be removed (from footer) without branding free license, and therefor that it could be extended (removing)to other files (CSS, java or whatever)

                          The information in question has nothing to do with branding free and it was not present on older versions.

                              We are talking about
                              <meta name="generator" content="vBulletin 3.8.0 Beta 3" />
                              and
                              /**
                              * vBulletin 3.8.0 Beta 3 CSS
                              * Style: 'vBulletin 3 Grey Liquid'; Style ID: 5
                              */
                              and
                              ?v=380b3c
                              I understand that the last one is done for caching purposes but you could also use a random number.
                              That's the end of that!
