  • Log in issues / code check please

    I have some users that use Safari and Fire Fox. They are having issues logging in and/or staying logged in. After some time searching. It seems that the header code has been a problem with others facing similar issues. I have made small changes just to center the logo and change the link. I am wondering if I screwed something up. Can somebody look through this please and tell me if this is ok? I have made a few error in getting my board set up the way I like it. I am afraid this might be another one.

    Code:
    <!-- logo -->
    <a name="top"></a>
    <table border="0" width="$stylevar[outertablewidth]" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" align="center">
    <tr>
     <td align="center"><a href="[URL]http://mysite.com/"><img[/URL] src="$stylevar[titleimage]" border="0" alt="$vboptions[bbtitle]" /></a></td>
     <td align="$stylevar[right]" id="header_right_cell">
      <if condition="$ad_location['ad_header_logo']">$ad_location[ad_header_logo]<else />&nbsp;</if>
     </td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    <!-- /logo -->
    <!-- content table -->
    $spacer_open
    $_phpinclude_output
    $ad_location[ad_header_end]

    I have never known the header template to cause these problems.

    The user will be automatically logged out if they are inactive for longer than the timeout:

    Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Cookies and HTTP Header Options -> Session Timeout

    To resolve this problem you can either increase the timeout or tell your users to check the Remember Me box when they login. That will automatically log them back in when they timeout.

    Also make sure your cookie path and domain are default:

    Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Cookies and HTTP Header Options

    The path should be "/" and the domain should be blank. Or also try using a cookie domain like this (which uses your domain name, including the beginning dot):

    .domain.com

    That will make it so your forum cookies work from any subdomain of your domain, with or without "www".

    Also, some portals and other addons will modify the login form to post to a full URL which can cause these kinds of problems because the login cookie is specific to one host (e.g. the cookie is written to www.domain.com when you are using domain.com). In that case you need to either disable the offending addon or make sure you are using the same host as the login form.

      I ran a search here with just "safari" as the keyword for titles only. Many threads come up. More than a few have mentioned that safari and firefox have had the same issues I am having. Some have found issues with their header code. Once these issues were fixed, their problems were solved.

      I am using vBadvanced. I have been pointed to this note. http://www.vbadvanced.com/forum/faq....trouble_cookie

        Anyone who has issues with logging in or staying logged in generally has a bad cookie setup, modified code, or a bad cookie itself.

          Could cookie issues only effect safari and firefox?
          modified code
          That is why I listed my header code. I did modify it a little to center the header and change the link.

            At Home I currently run IE7 Opera Firefox2 Safari for Windows, and for my Mac Safari, Firefox 3, and Opera for mac. Only once have I run into an issue into an issue on Safari on an older version of vBulletin 3. Nothing that would be in 3.7 with the default code.

              OMG thank you so much for pointing me to this link! I had the same problem for the exact same reason specified on the vbadvanced site ( I am using that as well). What was happening to me was I was typing in my url without the "www" and surfing the site, then when I click on the recent thread module in vbadvanced it would ask me to login again (my entire forum is private so viewing any thread requires login) because the URL of the link in the the vbadvanced would have the "www" and as they pointed out my "server is recognizing cookies differently depending on whether 'www.' is in the URL. " So I put the code they specified into my htaccess file and now it pushes everyone to the www even if they type in my url without it. Problem solved. Thank you!
