Move forum: Users need to login again. How to get around?

    Hi,

We wanted to move our forum to a new URL/IP address. There is no problem with moving the files + db. In fact, we got the forum located a new URL/IP address running no problem as a test bed.

However, it appears that our users would need to login again. By default, our users use the "Remember me" logic and - over time - just forget their passwords (may be even their user ID).

So ... is there a way to migrate the "I"m already logged in" state from the old to the new forum? Is this something controlled by the forum DB and basically could be managed there or is this a client-side feature (browser cookies?) which we can't control at all?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi,

that's a client-side feature as you have to change the cookies. A forum from Domain 1 can't read or set cookies for Domain 2.

I would recommend the users to use the "Forget Password?" function to get a new password.

        Thanks a bunch for clarification.

        a) where would a user find the "Forget Password?" feature/link
        b) is there an easy way to have this link on the forum main page?

        Thanks again

No sorry, this is not possible. Users just have to login once, and they remain logged in. Those who forgot their pass should have written it down in a safe place, or can use the forgotten my pass detail.

            >> or can use the forgotten my pass detail.
Where would users find this link?

When they login and enter incorrectly, they will be informed:

you tried 1 out of 5 times, to login, if you however forgotton your pass: click here.

              Which should be: http://www.yoursite.com/forum/login.php?do=lostpw
