I also consider spam absoluetly repulsive and that too porn spam, however the best solution I have seen at least for now is to ensure that at any given time, at least one member of the moderation team is online, looking for these bots on a periodic basis and taking them out before they get a chance to spam.

Its a tough job, but works better than turning member moderation on, which I find just as repulsive as well.

We've been hit as well over the last couple of days, so have just installed that No Spam mod, thanks for the links to it.

I've been getting a flood of them over the past couple of days too. I've tried switching to reCapta and that didn't slow them down. I've switched over to Q and A and we shall see if that helps.

Hopefully vBulletin figures out what the heck they are doing and sets up a patch. It has been crazy lately.

Would be great if we could get an update on whats being done (if anything) to counter this ? All 3 of my forums have all of a sudden been flooded with registrations...and with all the uncertainty with the posts in this thread, it seems like nothing is helping.

If we could just get a list of things that DOES work, that would be great.

Had over 100 new registrations on 3 vb forums in the last 12 hours or so, they have definitely found a way around this.

I currently now have enter several things :

4 profile fields must be entered to post and view the forum.

Randon question that reguards to the software I support so no 2 questions are back to back. aka no spam mod at vb.org.

Captcha is turned on plus I have email verification on as well.

I requested a mod that you have to enter your email address to continue registration what this will do is slow down the process but not stop it or they may say too much work etc.... So enter a email verify it to continue to register then normal registration. Plus verify registration by activating from your email. Like I said not a stopper but with what I have plus that it could hinder them a bit more.

Me too. I thought it was user error on my side but after testing that is what I saw as well. Spammers accounts are created and bypass the normal process.

And just like khosk mentioned before it appears they are getting registered without hitting the captcha page.

Changed the verification from Captcha to reCaptcha and the registrations stopped, but that was around the time that registrations seemed to die off for everybody. I'm not so sure that what we did is the final solution by any means.

Something happened yesterday and the flood gates opened up. 80% of our spammers were coming from fake gmail.com addresses. I think blocking gmail helped as well. Rumor has it that spammers have broken gmails verification too, anybody confirm?

I say it's spammer hunting season. Lock & load... lol
I sat and watched two join this morning with moderation turned on. The legit user that joined later was in the moderation cue. Also, I think they removed the banned users list as it is empty and I know I banned a bunch yesterday.

I would ban gmail on my forum but I have a lot of users that will leave if I make it where you can't use it so can I ban gmail accounts and still allow those having one currently registered to keep it?
