  • ASKIMET set up

    Hi,

Can anyone who has actually got the spam protection to work please advise?

1.0 I have been across at our friends at word press and set up a blog then 'purchased a pro blog licence (I asked them what would be suitable). Payment has gone through etc...

2.0 Under the user profile at word press is the wordpress.com API key

3.0 I have typed in this key to the vb options key field - also put it in the blog options as well as the global key.

Question what else is necessary to get this up and running? I posted with a test mail as a john doe user with viagra, Nokia N95 and bingo posts a treat and does not get parked into moderation as I expected?

Ok I must have missed a step - so any help would be appreciated before I die under a weight of SPAM

    cheers

Adding your akismet key into the vBulletin Options is all that you need to do

      Askimet Spam prevention

      Thanks

Yes I have done this of course but after a few days there was no effect. Spam posts (viagra NOKIA N95) the usual suspects were posted without being passed into moderation. I have now reverted to normal moderation.

My question was more general to poll if anyone has got this working and to check if I have set it up correctly - and then to see whether I could run a series of tests to confirm the calls are made to askimet. If entering the key is all that is necessary then it does not work at the moment.

      regards

I too could not get this to work. Entered the key but spam posts still dont get moderated.

some instructions/logs for this feature would be helpful.

Don't forget to also turn on the Human Verification system to the Q+A option, and add some home made creative questions/answers, here are a few examples: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showp...38&postcount=4

Are you saying that Spam Management using the Akismet key will not function unless I turn on Human Verification system to the Q+A option or you are recommending Q+A because you feel it is more effective than Image Verification?

So far I have had no success getting posts containing certain key words to automatically go to moderation.

No, I am saying to help fight the spam on the site to block it at the register level too, aside of trying to do so afterwards.

With the amount of spam threads on the forums here the last week, I've been posting the information to the thread starter to also make them aware that something's going on.

FWIW Akismet has never caught a single valid spam on my site. I do get 1 or 2 false positives a day though.

But then again I do a very good job of keeping spammers out to begin with.

So, basically, from what I understand from everyone's posts in this thread... it's not worth going through all the trouble to register w/Wordpress, and then paying $50+ per year for a key for each forum then?

A ps3 nokia viagra thread definitely should've been pulled.

So the Akismet equation looks something like: a waste of time (the convoluted signup process that needlessly sends you off to Wordpress) + loss of money for something that = sucks away additional time and resources w/ nothing but false positives.

Not really a positive sum game. In fact, that's just a flat out losing game.

That's really too bad. I upgraded to 3.7x to use Akismet. I was looking forward to it.

is it me? or you didn't actually have to buy a pro license.... the free api key should work fine, no?

                      ASKIMET key

                      Update:

I have run the Askimet protection for around a month an a half now on the test and main forum. It seems to trap WOW posts reasonably well on test - but there and on the main forum Viagra, Nokia's etc get through regularly despite being deleted and reported as SPAM. It does not seem to work very well on these posts or to 'learn them'.

Overall it is not good enough to trap Spam on a routine basis so I have reverted to moderation for the first ten posts on the main forum.

                      cheers

ps The free licence works just as well (or badly I should say) - I paid a pro blogger fee to support them

askimet is ok... but honestly, this has been working 10x better:
                        http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=173490

both together pretty much covers it.

I don't know what the problem is with Akismet not catching the spam on forums.

On one of my blogs, Akismet does an awesome job. In the past 3 months, it has blocked 596 spam comments... It has never missed one, and it has never accidentally marked a legitimate comment as spam.
I wonder if it just doesn't work well with forums?
                          Regards,
                          Nick

My experience with AKISMET on my site is that it catches spammers every day. The last one was someone who made 159 posts, and 2 of them were made public. The staff could quickly ban the user and delete all content (report as spam using inline moderation).
