We currently have a forum up and going..we're upgrading to vbulletin using the same server...I don't want to close down the forums..to do this...

You will need to close your phpBB forums while dong the import.

As stated above by Steve, you will need to turn your phpBB installation offline, not delete, just "Disable" the board via admin CP (weither it be phpBB3 or 2) and then you will have to use the IMPEX system by vBulletin to transfer your forums over.

Disabling it? So our members won't be able to use it?

And is there a way that I can "work" on the vbulletin and get it ready BEFORE I import my forums over?

Yes, disable it so that it is closed to your members.

Depending on what you are planning on doing with your vBulletin, you may be able to do it prior to importing although anything regarding forums, usergroups, permissions and users dhould be done after the import and modifications should not be installed before importing. Items such as settings, styles and languages can be done before the import although if you do this it is essential that you backup your vBulletin before starting the import.
