How forums are marked read?

I appologize if my search didn't find this topic and it has been asked before:

Hi, I will try to describe what I "believe" to be not working quite right.

If I make a new post, and then click the "new posts" link on the nav bar. My post shows up as a new post.

If I read a post and click "new post" it still shows up in the list even though I read it, it is only not in "bold" anymore which isn't that noticeable. I just re-installed VB after a few months of it being down, and I think I recall that it did not show the new posts I made, and when I read a post it did not show back up in the new post list after I opened the thread.

Is there anyway to get it to function in the manor I am asking?

I think it depends on whether you've got it set to cookies or database. I think it's more effective if it's done through the database.
