    Search returns no results

Hi. In our forum, searching for known strings returns odd results. Sometimes there are NO results. Sometimes only partial results.

For example, I created a thread with the words "Subheading" and "Reviews" in it. Searching for either of these did not return the thread.

I rebuilt the Search Indexes and the Post Cache. No change.

    Any ideas about what's happening?

    Thanks,

    Dan.

        Steve,

        OK. Here's the repro steps:

        1) Create a thread with the word "Subheading" and "Reviews" in a post.

        2) Click "CPAdmin --> Maintenance --> Update Counters --> Rebuild Search Index --> Rebuild Search Index" to uhh... rebuild the search index.

        3) Click "CPAdmin --> Maintenance --> Update Counters --> Rebuild Post Cache --> Rebuild Post Cache " to rebuild the post cache.

        4) In the forum, click "Search" and search for "subheading" and "reviews".

        Expected Result:
        - Find post.

        Actual Result:
        - No posts found.

Note - I ran this yesterday and got the "Actual Results" (above). I ran it today and got the "Expected Result".

It looks like a nightly job is running that updates some objects. What is being updated? What can be run manually from CPAdmin to do this? Any documentation that covers this?

        Thanks,

        Dan.

It is not necessary to manually rebuild the search index. Honestly it sounds like you have an add-on that is causing this.

To troubleshoot this, first reupload all the original vB non-image files (except install.php). Make sure you upload these in ASCII format and overwrite the ones on the server. Also be sure to upload the admincp files to whichever directory you have set in your config.php file. Then run 'Suspect File Versions' in Diagnostics to make sure you have all the original files for your version and that none show 'File does not contain expected contents':

Admin CP -> Maintenance -> Diagnostics -> Suspect File Versions

[Note: In some cases you may also need to remove any of the listed .xml files in the includes/xml directory.]

          Next, disable all plugins.

Note: To temporarily disable the plugin system, edit config.php and add this line right under <?php

          define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);

Then if you still have this problem, create a new style and choose no parent style. This will force it to use the default templates. Finally empty your browser cache, close all browser windows then try again. Make sure you change to the new style and view your forums with it. Do you have the same problem?
