  • Database backup - via phpMyAdmin

    hi there,

I am confused by these instructions.

    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/m...myadmin_backup

    Specifically for the Data Section.

Do the instructions mean that ONLY the Data box should be check and all the others underneath it remain blank?

    All of these are blank?
    Complete Inserts
    Extended inserts
    Maximal length of created query
    Use delayed inserts
    Use Ignore iserts
    Use hexadecimal for BLOB

Not sure which part exactly you are referring to and having a confusion with.

You can leave those blank... ensure these are ticked:

In the second area, called SQL Options, make sure you have the following boxes checked:

    Structure
    Add 'drop table'
    Add AUTO_INCREMENT value
Enclose table and field names with backquotes
    Data

    Please note:
The only consistently reliable method of backing up and restoring a database is with shell access via telnet or ssh. This is because backing up with a PHP script like that in the Admin CP or phpMyAdmin can result in PHP timeout errors and an incomplete backup file. (Especially with large Databases)

I've backed up my database without checking the "Add 'drop table'".

Is that bad? What is it's function?

        It adds this command to the backup: DROP TABLE IF EXISTS `tablename`;

Which instructs it to delete the table if it already exists so that it can be replaced with the backup version of the table. Without it, you may get errors that the "table already exists", in which case you would need to delete the tables before restoring the backup.

To make things easier, I simply recommend backing up again and ticking the box this time.
