small number of users getting this db error

Most of our users are able to access our boards with no problem. However, a small subset get a page that says there is a db problem or a blank page.

This is the error message from the page source:

MySQL Error : MySQL server has gone away
    Error Number : 2006
    Date : Monday, October 26th 2009 @ 02:10:47 PM
    Script :
    Referrer :
    IP Address :
    Username : Anonymous
    Classname : vB_Database_MySQLi

Any idea what is causing a small portion of the users to get this error?

This is a server issue. See this: http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/t...mysql_goneaway and this: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...265#post310265

If I post CSS and you don't know where it goes, throw it into the additional.css template.

They are not blocked at their end or at ours. They can access the site, but they get this error on the boards.

Lynne is right that this is a server issue. It's a very common error. I get it all the time.

But I know what you mean about certain users triggering this error more than others. For a while, we had a user that triggered the error every time he visited. In trying to track down the reason, we determined he was on dialup with a slow connection. I suspect that certain connections may saturate the database connection more than others.

As dodgeboard.com said, it could be happening to only those users because of the type of connection they have. You can up the wait_timeout a little bit (I think George usually recommends going up by increments of 60) and see if that helps.
