Repair/Optimize Question

I would like to run the repair/optimize on my database but the posts table is just simply too large (1.1GB). I know I can run the REPAIR command through the mySQL prompt but I think it will take quite awhile to complete. Do I need to turn off my forums before I run the repair command?

Also, is there anything else I can do to bring down the size of the database as the total size of the dump file is 4GB.

Yes, it would be best and will go quicker if you turm off your forums when doing this.

The only way to reduce the size of the database is to reduce the data, i.e., remove posts, attachments, or disable search and emptying the postindex and word tables.
