trying to make usergroup NOT viewable on the memberlist

I am trying to create a Public (Joinable) Custom Usergroup where the members don't show up on the memberlist.

In the Usergroup Manager I have selected "No" for Viewable on the Memberlist. But when members join this usergroup, their username is still showing up on the memberlist.

What am I doing wrong? I think it has something to do with the Public (Joinable) Custom Usergroup not being the Primary Usergroup.

That's because a Publicly Joinable Group must be a secondary grroup and they are showing up because of their primary group.

So the the Usergroup Manager's yes/no option:

Viewable on the Memberlist (Sets whether or not users in this group will appear on the member list)

only pertains to primary groups?

Mostly, because a yes will override a no.
