Hide Threads in Forum Section

OK, here is what I want to be able to do but let me know if there is an easier way.

I need to hide the Threads in Forum section in a parent forum. I am creating a different forum for each department and want the user to click on their department and show the subforums available. I don't want the "Threads in Forum" section.

Here is why I am doing this. I know I can set the forum to a category and get most of the effect I want. However I do not like how the category looks especially when there is 10 in a row. I know I can change the "category strip" style but that also affects all of the title bars.

Any help is very appreciated.

Solution

Ok I made my own solution to this problem.

I changed my forum display order for the domains that I did not want to show the thread section to numbers greater than 100 eg..101,102

Then i added a conditional statement that would set the 'cancontainthreads' = false if the displayorder of the forum was greater than 100 in the forumdisplay.php
