Use a usergroup to "opt out" of a forum section

I run a forum about a couple TV shows. Due to complaints about spoiler thread titles showing up in the "new posts" list, I've made a forum section dedicated to spoilers.

It was easy to deny access by default to the registered users group and then make a public group they could join in order to be able to read that forum, but how do I reverse that?

I want it so that by default, newly registered users can read threads in that forum section, but if a user goes and joins a public usergroup, they are then denied access to that forum. The problem is that they are inheriting their viewable permissions from their registered users group.

Anything I can do short of manually moving people out of the registered users group?

Create a Publicly joinable ground without permission to view that forum. Mark it as a "Banned" usergroup so its no permissions override yes permissions. Then make sure that it has proper permissions everywhere else like your registered usergroup.

      Doesn't appear to work.

I made a new group which was copied / based on the "Registered Users" group. I set "Public (Joinable) Custom Usergroups" to Yes and "This Usergroup is not a 'Banned' Group" to No. I then went to the permissions for the spoiler forum and edited the new spoilers group to all "No".

With my test account, I joined the public spoilers group and I was still able to view / read that forum.

EDIT: I just found this thread and that actually may be enough to make my forum members happy. It'd still be nice to get the group solution, but now that there's this exclude search (which I assume works in 3.6.x), I'm not too worried if we can't get it working.
