  • Best Database Backup Option

My site,, is currently hosted by My forum has recently grown to a size where backing up using phpMyAdmin and saving a backup like vbulletin.sql to my computer is now timing out and not completing. The problem I have is I can't backup my database with SSH or Telnet because it is not supported by my host. Other than the obvious solution of changing hosts, are there any other options you guys can provide that would allow me to make successful backups?

If phpMyAdmin doesn't work for you, and you don't have SSH/Telnet, I can't really think of anything else. My suggestion would be to do what you already mentioned and change hosts.

Or - check with your host to see if they'll do a backup of the database for you since they don't give you SSH/Telnet access.

Note: If you have cronjobs available through your host, you can use this crontab script to automate your backups:
