can anyone tell me why I got this message, via e-mail, 42 of them, each one about 1 minute apart, the script line and times are different in all 42

If that's the first time you've seen the error, I'd guess your site or someone else on the same server got slammed with a bunch of simultaneous requests for pages that talk to mysql and it ran out of connections. You should report it to your host in case they need to raise the connection limit to a more reasonable number, but it may have just been random and if it doesn't occur again might not be something to worry about.
