I am trying to disable the forum by running some SQL code, but even though i update the bbactive value to 0 in the settings table it does not work, is there a second setting somewhere?

Yes, the datastore caches all of the options, and the forum works off of the cache. See this thread. I think the serial format is different between 3.0 and 3.6, but that query gives you the general idea. You can manually change it in phpmyadmin. -
