    This is html, not xhtml. Try making xhtml compliant code using this instead:

    border="0" style="border: 1px solid #FF0000;background: #DDD;"

    ... should be sufficient. If that doesn't show the way you want, what is wrong? What colors are showing? Screenshot of the two browsers?

    do I need CCS attribute? I just want a plain table with border size of 5 and border color red I don't want anything else

    I like to create a table that combatible with IE and FF. I used the following code it display correctly on IE but it display 2 different colors on FF.
