  • Best backup solution?

    Hello

First let me say that I'm just learning all this stuff and I had some questions about backing up my forums. I have my forum all setup and now it's time to address the backup issue. Note: When you guys start talking too technical about databases you lose me so please keep my my knowledge level which is beginner.

From what I've read am I better off running the backup through the cron menu in cpanel than through the vb interface?

If the answer is yes is it as simple as pasting the script into "Command to run" in my standard cron manager? ( and setting up the schedule of course)

If yes how do I go about finding the script?

How often would you recomend backing up?

Are there any other insights you can suggest for a backup program?

    Help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

The only consistently reliable method of backing up and restoring a database is with shell access via telnet or ssh. This is because backing up with a PHP script like that in the Admin CP or phpMyAdmin can result in PHP timeout errors and an incomplete backup file.

    Please see the instructions here:

    Backup:
    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/maintenance_ssh_backup

    Restore:
    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/maintenance_ssh_restore

If you don't have telnet or SSH access, some people have reported success with these scripts:

    MySQLDumper:

    MySQLHotxcopy:
