Access denied for user mySQL 5.0

Hello; I read several posts including the helpful sticky above by Steve. My apologies if this was answered but the sticky string is closed, so I make this new thread. I can't figure out how to get around this error:
Mysql_connect(): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
    D:\InetPub\vbull\includes\class_core.php on line 279
I upgraded msSQL from 4 to 5.0. I think it has something to do with password conversions as Steve mentions; If anyone has done this can you post a step by step for a novice like me? Any suggestions are most welcome.

Hello, I am answering my own post just in case someone searches for this problem here on vbulletin.com. You will find no solutions here, the default reply is "consult your host." Well, I am the host for my vBull board so that really does not work for me, and I suspect others find this stock response a bit lacking. I found a comprehensive solution to the ACCESS DENIED or DOES NOT SUPPORT AUTHENTICATION PROTOCOL at the mysql forum:

Some fellow named glatts from Brazil solved it, so if the link does not work search for that user and Brazil, you will find it works like a charm. Good luck to all and I hope you don't spend as much time on this as it seems others have; my board was down 5 days because of this bug.
