Upgrading to 3.6 is a big hurdle as my hoster doesn't supply upgrade to next MySQL 4.x without a chunk of change. In doing this, would you recommend I upgrade to 4.0.x or 4.1.x? for best result with vBulletin. Feeling rather left behind by this obstacle.

Your host is going to charge you to upgrade their software??
From the faq...Minimum Requirements: vBulletin is designed to run on every server that has PHP 4.3.3 or greater and MySQL 4.0.16 or greater installed.
It is recommended to use PHP 4.4.2 or 5.1.2, or later and MySQL 5.0.19 or later.Lats...
