Hmmm, Freddie - weird one this, but the default mysql install comes with several ini file templates - namely my-huge.ini, my-innodb-heavy-4G.ini, my-large.ini, my-medium.ini, my-small.ini, and my-template.ini.

All of the above include the max_allowed_packet variable (which is set at 16M in all), EXCEPT my.ini..., which has no reference to it at all?

Okay, but it's still a sever issue. Check post #4 again. There is more there than just an '8 hour closed connection' issue.

In addition to the vB settings, the allowed size of the attachments depends on the PHP and MySQL configuration. You may need to check and change the upload size for both PHP and for MySQL. Note, you'll need to have root access to the server to do this (or have your host do it.) Make these changes to php.ini:

    upload_max_filesize = xM

..and my.cnf (or my.ini for Windows systems)

    set-variable=max_allowed_packet=xM

Change it to the size ('x') you want in Megabytes. Restart the webserver and MySQL after making these changes.

Note: You may also need to increase the max_execution_time and max_input_time variables in php.ini.

Also you might want to take a look at this for other settings that affect file uploads:

Your error shows that the upload died on a 1 megabyte file.

If you upload five 20k files, does it work?

    from the mysql docs:

By default, the server closes the connection after eight hours if nothing has happened.

    Don't think that's an issue

There's nothing else in either of the links you've given me that help. What else could be going wrong? To me it seems that the database isn't allowing more than one file to be written to a post? Bizarre that it works for a single file...

This is a MySQL issue, here are a few of the reasons for the MySQL server going away:

    Also from the MySQL site:

    Multiple attachments not working?

    Hi Guys,

This is confusing me a bit. Got vb up and running beautifully, however small issue is the attachments. On a post, i've set the attachments manager pop-up to allow 5 file upload fields.

If you choose to upload just ONE file, it works perfectly, the file is uploaded and the post is stored.

However, if you choose to upload MORE than one file, OR one or more files to a post that already has an attachment, the upload fails and all you get is a screen saying:

    Database error
The theSwell.net - Home to Bournemouth's Surf Community database has encountered a problem.

Don't get it! I've changed all the max_filesize (etc) variables in my.ini and php.ini. Still getting that issue though!

    phpinfo.php: http://www.theswell.net/phpinfo.php
    main forum: http://www.theswell.net/forums/index.php

    Hope you can help.

    Cheers,
    Jack.
