  • Spammers still signing up - Whats happening?

    Hey,

I just upgraded from 3.5 because I was getting a lot of spammers, up to 5 a day and having to delete their posts.

They were getting past image verification, I banning and email verification on 3.5, a number of people reported this.

I just upgraded and I am getting the same thing, image verification on and still getting registrations from the same email address (gaweb.com for the first) and spam being posted.

can you please check this out because I am getting a lot of porn spam on my forum and I don't want the SE spiders to find links to porn sites.

    Thanks
    John

Have you tried banning that email domain?

They use more than one email address.

I really dont think that is the full solutoin.

I to noticed the same thing in the past 3-4 months, lots of new user registrations -- spammers -- passed e-mail and image verification and are full users.

Most try to post in Announcments, its locked, so they never "spam" thus no need for a "spam checker" to scan posts (remove the spammers BEFORE THEY CAN POST!).

I hope to god this isnt in 6.1, if it still is I wish someone else would reply with something usefull.

Banning spammers never does any good, slows them down but their are endless ip's and e-mails available on the internet.

To me this is an automated bot task and is due to an exploit? in vb?

John, is DeuceAce your forum? If it is, I don't see any image verification.

Yeah, I removed it when they were still able to register, it didn't help and some real users had problems registering with it enabled.

Why not enable a few special features for your forum, that's required to be setup during registration? That will throw the bots off a little bit as they aren't equipped to handle that sort of info.

I don't know how to do it either to be honest, required fields don't work either, they bypass that.

Got another today that posted a few and a few new regs over the weekend.

I have a "location" field in the user profile that must be filled in along with the country flag modification on vb.org where they must state thier country to get the right flag.

The spammers usually put a stupid combination of London as location and China as country for instance - the registration doesn't get passed moderated users!

hi mate i had this problem myself but looked into it and jus noticed that my image verification thing isnt setup properly

make sure the 'regimage' folder is in your /images dir then under vbulletin options set the image verification to 'truetype font' and make sure the 4 boxes, random font, size slant and colour are all checked.

save and check them settings again and the sample image should look like mine below. i havent seen any changes yet to the amount of bots getting through etc but im presuming its going to be a lot more difficult for them now

I feel your pain! And spamers ARE pains
You might try a promotion system. We set it up so that "registered users must be moderated for the first 5 posts. If they are spammers, ban them if they are real people you can manually promote them immediately. Add a system message explaining what you are doing and why
