Question on Spammers and Post limits????

Just started and I’m using 3.5 V Bulletin
Hey I’m new to this board. I have a question on holding down the spammers.
Is it feasible to set a post limit on new users before they can start a new thread?
If so how do you go about it and what user rights do I have to have (Mod, Admin or GOD MODE) to set it up???

You can use the Usergroup Promotions system to do this.

    1. Set the registered usergroup so that this group can reply to existing threads but not post new threads:

Admin CP -> Usergroups -> Usergroup Manager -> Edit

    2. Create a new usergroup with the appropriate overall permissions and allowing new threads:

Admin CP -> Usergroups -> Usergroup Manager -> Add New Usergroup

    3. Create a Promotion to promote users that reach this post level to that group:

Admin CP -> Usergroups -> Promotions

I tried this and saved the changes, I followed the steps....step by step, and it didn't seem to work. Maybe I'm thinking wrong, but I thought this would change that minute. I had a member create a new user name and try and create a thread and they were able too. Also, all the members that meet the minimum are still listed as registered users, not the new group "member".

The promotion is not instant. This is done by the Promotions Scheduled Task. You need to wait long enough for that task to run (usually once per hour on an active forum). Also Scheduled Tasks are triggered by code in the footer template, so if you have modified this template or added code to other templates it may interfere with the running of the tasks. Also if there is no activity on your forums, the task won't run.
