linking login on main site with the one on the forum

Hi, i would like to intergrate a login from my main site to the one on the forums, so for example, a user enters there details at the index page of mysite, and when they click log on, it takes them to the forum.

I have linked it together, but when i click login it does not actually log me in. Just displays the forum.
