Prevent new users from posting for set number of days

Apologies if this has already been asked or is in fact already a feature that I'm not aware of - but is there a way to prevent new users from posting on the forum for a set number of days after they register.

Basically I want new members to only have read access to the site until a 'cooling off' period of 7 days has expired. This will help filter out users who have only signed up to cause trouble - I run a sports related discussion board and there is a lot of rivalry/ill feeling between different sets of supporters.

So is this possible? If not, does anybody know of a hack/mod that does this?

Yes you can do this with promotions:

1. Create a new usergroup with the appropriate overall permissions:

Admin CP -> Usergroups -> Usergroup Manager -> Add New Usergroup

2. Set the appropriate usergroup permissions for the forum(s) in question:

Admin CP -> Usergroups -> Forum Permissions

3. Create promotion to promote users from "Registered Users" to this new group after x number of days registered.

4. Update the permissions for the registered users group to not allow them to post.
