    What were you doing that lead to this problem? Were you working on your database or changing hosts?

            yes, I do. and now I no longer get the same error, but when I click on any individual forum I get this:

            Database error in vBulletin 3.5.1:

            Invalid SQL:

            SELECT COUNT(*) AS threads,
            SUM(IF(thread.lastpost >= 1143174315 AND open <> 10, 1, 0)) AS newthread

            FROM thread AS thread

            WHERE forumid = 2
            AND sticky = 0
            AND visible IN (0,1,2);

            MySQL Error : Can't open file: 'thread.MYI'. (errno: 145)

              Run a repair on your thread table, after that, can you post the contents of your my.cnf file without any passwords that might be in it.

                repairing it didn't do anything.

                here's the my.cnf:

                initially there was no my.cnf, so I just copied this over from another server hoping it'd help with that max connects problem

                [client]
                port = 3306
                socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

                [mysqld]
                port = 3306
                socket = /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
                skip-locking
                skip-innodb
                max_connections = 500
                key_buffer = 16M
                myisam_sort_buffer_size = 64M
                join_buffer_size = 1M
                read_buffer_size = 1M
                sort_buffer_size = 2M
                table_cache = 1800
                thread_cache_size = 384
                wait_timeout = 2
                connect_timeout = 10
                tmp_table_size = 64M
                max_allowed_packet = 64M
                max_connect_errors = 10
                thread_concurrency = 2
                query_cache_limit = 1M
                query_cache_size = 32M
                query_cache_type = 1
                query_prealloc_size = 16384
                query_alloc_block_size = 16384

                [mysqld_safe]
                open_files_limit = 8192

                [mysqldump]
                quick
                max_allowed_packet = 16M

                  Change your wait_timeout from 2 to 180, 2 seconds is just not accectable :/

                              When you ran the repair last time, what did it report back?
