  • move files and database to a new host

    Hi,

I am moving to a new web host and will need to migrate all of my files and the database. I will set up a new database with the same name as the old one at the new host and will import the old database. Is that all I'll need to do? Or will there be any other specific files I'll need to change? I have the directories set up at the new host just they way they were at the old host so should I be able to just copy stuff over? Please assist.

BTW - still running an old version (3.0.3) and will be looking for assitsance with an upgrade once I get the old stuff running in its new home.

    Thanks!

This is how I'd probably do a move:

Prior to the move, I'd shut the boards down and via SSH do an entire SQL dump. From there, I SSH the SQL dump back onto the NEW server's database.

Edit config.php to reflect the changes on the new server.

Upload all the vBulletin files back.

Check to see if everything works (do a new post, reply, etc.)

If and only if there's time, I'd continue upgrading towards the latest version of vBulletin.

Jelsoft also has a guide available as reference should you like to print out their instructions or peruse

Thanks Josh - I'm trying to plan ahead and will be shutting down tomorrow night. I've already notified members. Also just found the config file and will get the server name from the new host. If I run into any problems I'll ask for more help.

I'll also look into upgrading once the old stuff is running. It's beeen over a year since I set up the original forum and it's been running great so I haven't wanted to make any changes.

Thanks for your help. You guys were awesome when I had lots of questions during my original set up last year.
