    In your shell type

    mysql -uUSER -pPASS database

    and press enter

    You will then be connected to your mysql server. The prompt you will get is:

    mysql->

    behind it type the alter query and end with ;

    once run you get the prompt back and then run the other query and end with ;

    when done running you can type exit or quit to get back to the shell prompt and you can exit ssh
