Mods not in Mods group?

What I want to do is make a member Mod of a forum but not have them in the Mods member group.

The problem is that when I make a member a Mod they're automatically added to the Mods member group and when I remove a Mod from the Mods member group they're automatically removed from forum Mod.

VB 3.5.2 patched upgrading to 3.5.3 next Saturday.

Is it possible to do?

Moderators don't have to be in the mod group. The group is just for convenience of assigning permissions to mods. Just move them to another group.
