  • Lock Tables on when using mysqldump?

This isn't so much a 'How do I', but I thought this was the best forum for it. The vBulletin manual shows that tables should be locked when doing a backup using mysqldump via SSH. Currently my host doesn't give me lock tables privilages so when I do mysqldump backups I use --skip-add-locks and --skip-lock-tables so I don't get an error. Since I haven't been closing the forum when I do backups do I need to lock the tables or close the forum when I do a backup or is it not necessary? I can ask my host to see if they will give me lock tables privilages, but I'm just wondering first if it is necessary? Thanks for your help.

It is still a good idea to lock the tables to make sure they don't change during the backup. But turning off your forums is the next best thing.

OK Thanks. I've asked my hosts for lock tables privilages.
