similar threads won't show

this seems to be the same problem as in this thread: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166344

i have followed the instructions in that thread:

> activated show similar threads
> activated auto similar thread searches
> i have rebuild the similar thread index
> the SHOWTHREAD template is the original version.

but still the similar threads don't show?

any suggestions?
