Paid Subscription without removal of usergroup

Here is the situation. On my site I have a paying "supporter" subscription. This allows them to access certain areas of the site, but also adds them to a Supporter usergroup, that gives them a graphical tagline to say that they have supported the site. What I would like to happen is that regardless if their subscription runs out, that they ALWAYS have the Supporter graphic enabled under their name, but they are removed from all special forums.

Basically when they open a subscription. They are added to two groups.

Group 1 - Allows access to certain forum areas.
Group 2 - Grants them the supporter graphic and status.

When the subscription ends , ONLY group 1 is removed.

As far as I can see, ALL groups are reverted back to their default once the subscription period ends.

One idea that comes to mind is to have the subscription change the primary group. The primary group will add forum access. Then you can create a promotion based on the primary group that adds users to a secondary group which adds rank.

Promotions don't reverse if the user loses their qualifications.
