Upgrading - are these tables required?

I've reuploaded the db to a test db, deleteing the unrequired tables ready for upgrade - do i need to copy my existing insatllation into a new folder to upgrade? or do i just run the install upgrade on my existing database?

They are all required, esp the setting, setting group, tables...

Oh and for those thinking about doing this - look at the timestamps on my posts....

Only took an hour - and that includes EVERYTHING.....
