When I changed the permission for unregistered users (I allow them to post and replly) I get the following message in red:

Does this make the forum less secure?

It's doubtful but that depends on what you changed.

I changed to allow for unregistered users to post, and reply to posts. The reason I'm asking is the red. Usually when you see red - there is something to be alarmed about.

You said it depends on what I changed. What change in this section would make my forum less secure? I've been hacked a few times using PHPBB, so I'm very interested in keeping my forum secure.

They could upload attachments with viruses. As long as you do not allow HTML in posts or sigs, you should be pretty safe though.
