make avatars re-appear after upgrade

after the upgrade user avatars no longer show up. What shows up is a link in place of the image like this User Avatar .
How do I go about making them re-appear again? I also notice there is no upload feature in the usercp to change there avatar

I had to change $avatar to $post[avatarurl] in the postbit template to make the avatars reappear.
