    Actually it works fine with a space between the -u and root.

    Steve:
    mysqldump --opt -u root -p dbname > backup.sql

    -uroot

    there shouldn't be a space.

    etc -uroot -p dbasename > etc

    it will then prompt for the password, press enter and don't type anything there.

    yes. Thanks, that worked.

    However,
    After copying the db to my new server I did this:

    % mysqladmin -p create vbulletin
    % mysql -u root vbulletin < /root/vbulletin_bup.sql

    I received this error:

    ERROR 1062 at line 44: Duplicate entry '1' for key 1

    Looking at the files listed in /var/db/mysql/vbulletin
    there are only 6 files, access.xxx thru adminhelp.xxx
    There should be more but I don't know what caused
    the error above.

    Also, is the cart before the horse, in that I'm loading
    the database before I install the vb3rc3 software on
    the new server? (It was already running vb3rc3 before
    this move)

    Is that what is in your config.php file now? If so, this should work:

    mysqldump --opt -u root -p dbname > backup.sql

    started a topic database backup password error

    database backup password error

    I'm getting an "Access denied for user" error when I try to backup my database. I don't know what to put in as the password.

    When I installed vb3rc3, the config.php file said:
    // username and password to log onto db server
    $dbusername="root";
    $dbpassword="";

    So now, what is the password to the vbulletin database?
