    I am trying to upgrade and when it asks for the Customer Number I enter it and it comes back and asks for it over and over...

    are you using the customer number which is defined at the top of /install/authenticate.php ?

        I am still at the upgrade/php script...

        If I run the authenticate.php I just get a blank page.

          Open authenticate.php and find:
          PHP Code:
          define('CUSTOMER_NUMBER''yourcust#here');
          This is the set of data you should be entering in the upgrade script.

              I had the same. The number on the authenticate script had a space in it. So they weren't matching.

                couldnt you easily just change the number in authenticate.php to get around the customer number validation? i dunno if anyone else has thought of that but if its possible i think it should be fixed before vb3 gold. i dont know really anything about programming so id have to leave it to someone who knows what their doing to confirm that it works.

                  I think it's an anti piracy measure but im not sure if changing the number would work or not as I get the impression that VB probably phones home on installation with the number you enter in that box. They could probably do with hashing that customer number in authenticate.php to provide extra security

                    but i remember seeing somewhere that it sends no information to jelsoft when you install or upgrade. anyways if you just open authenticate.php it shows the customer number right there. you dont need to change it, you can get the number really easily anyways.

                      You can easily check for a "call home"-function:
                      Install/Upgrade vB 3 on your own PC while you aren't connected to the internet.

                        No the point of the customer number was that we can't use any authentication in the upgrade / install process.

                        A big problem in vB2 was users leaving the upgradeX.php scripts uploaded and users could run them and downgrade their board so to speak.
