COPPA compliance - must require birthdate upon registration??

If you want to comply with COPPA do you really have to force people to enter their actual birthdate now upon registration?

What happend to the "BORN ON OR BEFORE DATE X" & "BORN ON OR AFTER DATE Y"

Is that not a compliant method or something?

Next to a social security number, my drivers license or real birthdate is the last thing I would want to give a random person/website these days.

BTW, for our site, I would just assume DENY users 13 and under -- but it looks like with that option enabled, it still asks for the full/actual birthdate of the person registering.

The born on or after thing is NOT in compliance with the laws, thats why we collect the birthday on the first page..

Denying users under 13 should be in compliance.

As far as complying, you need to collect birthday info to verify that they are of age. Of course they can lie, and then its mostly out of your hands. Unless you find out, in which case you should ban / remove the member.

What if I just change $vbphrase[read_agree_abide_by_rules]
to "I am 18 years old or older, and I have read and agree to abide by the {1} rules."

I would like to see a ESRB access and make sure users have no ability to change the birthday they have enter. If someone is young and you have a forum setup for older member's, all they have to do is change their own age in User CP to access the forum. I think that is a flaw in the COPPA system.

No, you have to check the date of birth AFAIK.
