Custom template content show up in another template?

I have created a template that I've named: topside

I'd like the content of this template to show up in forumdisplay.

I've tried adding: $topside to forumdisplay right under $navbar but nothing was inserted.

Is there a trick to get the content of one template to show up in another template?
