  • Moving Hosts [Again]

I have used the search function to search for some other similar threads and none answer the questions i have so i thought id post a new thread and ask for your help.

I have my site on my current host and have access via FTP and Cpanel now do i just need to copy the curent files over FTP to my computer and then save a database backup, move hosts then upload the lot?

I also dont understand this Telnet/SSH.

    Cheers

Instructions for moving servers are in the online manual here:

    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/moving_servers

Note: The only reliable method of backing up and restoring a database is with shell access via telnet or ssh. Please see the instructions here:

    Backup:
    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/m...nce_ssh_backup

    Restore:
    http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/m...ce_ssh_restore

This is because backing up with a PHP script like that in the Admin CP or phpMyAdmin can result in PHP timeouts errors and an incomplete backup file.

Here is an explanation of SSH:

What about a full site backup along with databases then re-uploading that?

That depends. As long as the databse is backed up and restored correctly, that should work.

I found doing a complete restore on my new server did not work.
I restored all the text files but restored my database separately.
It will depend if your database names are different.
For instant yoru current db may be gtech_vbulletin and your new one could be xyz_vbulletin. It's not hard to do. I'll be moving my board from one server to another this weekend.
