  • Question about vBulletin "cron" jobs

I would assume that vB cron jobs are only activated if someone visits the forum to allow the script to run. Is there any limitation to what can, or should, be run in a job such as this? I'm thinking about performance issues in the database, mostly, but any tips from someone who has created their own cron job to do non-vB things would be helpful.

Usually you would only use vB's cron system for tasks that don't take a lot of time and don't have to be run at an exact time without tolerance. This is because vB's cron tasks are executed at run time when a page is loaded.

I've thought about the scheduling problem, and thought I could create a simple job on my PC to visit the site regularly, to make sure the job runs, if that is needed.

Would it be better to use the same task on my PC to load a page separately from vB that does something that takes some time to run? If the script takes more than about 10 seconds, I'll look for another solution, but because I use a third-party host, and I doubt they'll let me create a "real" cron job.

How much time is "too much?" Does the user's page-load stall while the job runs?

The tasks take the form of a 1 x 1 transparent gif image loading on the page. So the page should still load, but it will show as continuing to load until the image / task finishes.

From this, then, I'd guess that anything that takes longer than a couple of seconds could be problematic? If the user leaves the page or stops the loading, it would stop the script, right?

I think the task would still finish... I think.
