  • Allow search engines to read the archive but not other logged out users

We want the site indexed but we dont allow non members to visit the site. It would be nice if the engines could get in and index everything but still not allow everyone else. Could we somehow check the user agent and if its a bot of some type, let them access the entire site to index it? This would help us with search engine placement but would still stop non members from viewing entire posts because once they click the link from the search engine they would be prompted to log in.

Can someone set me in the right direction for something like this?

There is no function to do this. This requires modifying the code. We cannot officially support code modifications or forums running modified code, however can try searching or asking for help with this over at www.vbulletin.org.

Why do you actively support these sites, but not what they represent?

I have posted it on vbulletin.org but haven't heard back. Wouldn't this be a simple template conditional?

No, if I thought is was a template conditional, I would have recommended that option.

or they do one of two things, they hit back in their browser - and hit the cache link at google, yahoo, msn, etc...

Or the throw a google, msn, or yahoo useragent up into opera or moz, or with prox or a million other ways and just go browse your site as if they are a spider - I know cause I do it all the time.

Some users wish to change the way their vB works acts and runs, so we give our users the ability to have the resource and let them do it. It does not mean we support it, or the code, but for the users who want it. They have access to it.
